Goldpanning Championships have been organized in Switzerland every second year since 1989 by the Swiss Goldprospector's Association. These are open competitions - everybody may participate whether young or old - from abroad or not - or whether he is a professional panner or an amateur.

The Rules of the Swiss Goldpanning Championships are simple. The fastest goldpanner in time that finds all the gold flakes hidden in the sand is elected as Swiss champion.

Traditionally Swiss Goldpanning Championships are organized together with one ore more associations from that locality where the competitions are hold, i.e. a sports club. The Swiss Goldprospector's Association is responsible for the competition while the fun-program is set up by the local association. This way both associations benefit from each other.

The Swiss Goldpanning Championships 2011 will be held on June 25th/26th at Fraumattcity, Duerrenroth. The localities for further Swiss Goldpanning Championships (2013, etc.) are not fixed yet. Call us if you know of a local association that might join in such an agreement. Our championship coordinator is Marlis Luedi. Please contact her through our contact form.

Bowil, Ct. Bern (4th - 5th of July 2009)

Logo SM09 BowilBowil and the log cabin Schächli were for the third time the centre of the Swiss Goldpanning Championships. This time the championships took place completely in the open air. One front of the log cabin changed to a gold prospectors' bar by Willi Lüdi's work. On the meadow beside the log cabin a platform was built where Simu and Simu performed on Saturday evening and where people could dance. Tables protected by military tents were used by the audience. The Klondike category was provided again in the competitions. In this category only a traditional gold pan (American type, frying pan-style) was allowed. Sam Sosef, World Champion 2008 from the Netherlands won the Men's category with a time of 2.01. Overall champion (fastest time out of men/Ladies and Klondike) was Marlise Lüdi, our chief of organizers. A piece of jewellery sponsored by Bjioutier Sonderegger belongs to her. It is a silvery Swiss cross with a nugget in the centre. Erroneuously (awkward calculation error of th Jury!) Sam Sosef was appointed overall champion on site. 6 Nations and 106 goldpanners participated. The organisation was possible thanks of Willi and Marlise Lüdi and a lot of work. Chief of the competition was Peter Grubenmann.

Bowil, Ct. Bern (Oct. 5th - 6th 2007)

Schweizermeisterschaften im Goldwaschen 2007Bowil and the log cabin Schächli were for the second time the centre of the Swiss Goldpanning Championships. The site was so good in 2005 that we decided to change it again in a Western town. We did not organize this championship together with a local association for the first time. Instead we did it on our own. The log cabin became a Goldrush-Saloon which was completely full on Saturday evening. We had the Klondike category the first time for the competitions. There it was only allowed to use an American type of pan (shape of a frying pan, but everybody could bring its own). We wanted to give a counter-weight to the Speed pan which is hardly used out in the creeks. Arturo Ramella showed that he masters both. He won in both categories, with the Speed-Pan in 1:28 and with the Klondike in 5 minutes. 156 patrticipating goldpanners - a lot of them specialliy traveling in from abroad for only this weekend (Poland/Slowakia) - and a good amount of people walking by made out of this championship a perfect one in a perfect atmosphere (also supported by the good automn weather).  The organisation again made possible by Willi and Marlise Lüdi and Fritz Grundbacher with a hughe amount of work.

Schweizermeisterschaften 2005 in Bowil (Emmental)

The organisers around Willi and Marlise Lüdi changed the log cabin Schächli in Bowil (Emmental) into a little Western town. There was a bar in the much liked Western Saloon and "Trapperfood" was served until early in the mornings. In the Wood, Stone and Ironware Store carpenter works of Adrian Müller & Co. could be seen and in an emergency it was also good for sleeping. Those not participating in the evening-programme (Gropbach-Cup with shooting, horseshoe-throwing and frying-pan-goldpanning) could go to the Country-Night in the big tent of the Street Cleaners Emmental. This association was holding its Funny Days (American Car & Bike Meeting) parallel to the Swiss Goldpanning Championship. 123 participants showed up. A lot of booths invited to shop the western style.

Brig, Kt. Wallis (23./24. Juni 2001)

Logo SM01

The Stockalper castle in Brig was the perfect scenery for the 7th Swiss Goldpanning Championship. 173 participants from 12 Nationen met for that golden competition under ideal weather conditions. The Valais organizing committee provided the goldpanners not only a medieval surrounding but also an amusing Saturday evening with the "Chorbini" music group, a transforming artist and young Valais talents. Old and new contacts grew over a glass of the specially bottled championship-wine.

The first time where there is no rain during a Swiss Goldpanning Championship! But water is an essential element for goldpanners. The 5th Swiss Goldpanning Championships are hold one week before the World Championships in Italy. This is probably the reason why we have a new record in the number of nations competing: A total of 16 nations and 250 participants.

Hergiswil near Willisau, Ct. Luzern (2/3 September 1989)

Logo SM 1989The newly formed Swiss Goldpropectors Association organizes their first Goldpanning Championships in the village of Hergiswil in the Napf area. 150 participants - lots from abroad - join the successful competition. Saturday evening is theater evening. A local group of actors shows a part of the "Goldprospector's theater" - a piece that was first shown ten years ago. It is the story about a local from Hergiswil that went for goldprospecting during the depression time of the second World War. His successful find is the reason for the audience to join in a Polonaise-dance. This is the beginning of a long night for all that liked dancing.

Rules

Participation is open to everybody - beginner or professional, foreigner or not. Goldpanning is performed in hand made pools of 90 (width) x 140 (length) x 20 cm (depth). You can start in one of the following categories:

Participants starts in heats consiting of 20 persons. Each competitor of the heat gets the same amount of sand/gravel mixture (approx. 5 to 10 liters). There is the same amount of gold hidden in the sand per heat (between 4 to 12 flakes). Only the jury knows the exact amount. The competitor has to pan out the gold flakes in the fastest time possible. For each gold flake lost 5 minutes of penalty will be given. The maximum time to pan is limited to 20 minutes. The goldpanner has to put the gold flakes in a vial and hand this out to the jury. The jury compiles the result lists. According to the number of participants registered the competitors have to qualify through quarter- and semifinals to reach the finals. The competitors get their gold back after the competition together with a certificat.
